Feels Like Spring: Opening Date for Genesee County’s Only Drive-In Theater

When you live in Genesee County, driving down Fenton Road between Hill Road and Maple Avenue... nothing is more noticeable than the giant blue drive-in movie screen and the iconic "23 Highway Theater" sign. It's the best time of year for the US 23 Drive-In Theater.

When does US 23 Drive-In Theater open for the season?

It's always sad to see the theater shut down at the end of September / early October each year, but exciting to see opening weekend announced. It brings back so many memories (date nights, family movie night, memorable movies).

• This year, opening weekend is slated for the last weekend in April. Friday April 28th the movies are back, according to their social media post.
• Notice, in their post, opening weekend movies will be announced one week prior.

Hours and prices for US 23 Drive-In Theater

Their website still says 'closed for the season' as I'm sure they're updating everything. As of now, prices show the following:

• Adults $11.00
• Children (3-12) $7.00
• Children under 2, free

Each ticket price is good for a double feature. The only downside you could possibly end up mud bogging in the US 23 Drive-In Theater driveway during spring's rainy weeks.

The only drive-in theater remaining in Genesee County

Miracle Twin was the other drive-in theater operating, in Burton, MI near Centennial Farms on Belsay Road, until it closed in 2008 according to MLive. Here's what remains of the sign at the entrance.

We're lucky to have one of only nine drive-in theaters in Michigan, right here in Genesee County. (See more history here.) Since it opened in 1951, US 23 Drive-In Theater has had its rough patches. (Remember the arson fire in 1997?) It's always managed to grow (more screens) and thrive. That's a Flint-area tradition I hope continues for a lifetime to come.
