About 200 people gathered at Mott Community College’s Ballenger Field House Thursday night for a public forum on the proposed megasite in Mundy Township. The discussion highlighted a mix of concerns and hopes as residents looked for clarity on a project that has dominated local conversation since earlier this year.

Public Forum Draws a Large Crowd

The state spent $261 million to acquire and prepare the 1,300-acre property, roughly 10 miles west of Flint. Sandisk had planned a $63 billion development that included about 10,000 jobs before backing out in July. The withdrawal prompted the state to reveal its incentive package, which exceeded $6 billion. That disclosure reignited debate over Michigan’s strategy of using public money to lure large-scale employers.

The panel featured former Congressman Dan Kildee, State Sen. John Cherry, Mackinac Center policy director James Hohman, and megasite opponent JoAn Mende. Journalist Jim Kiertzner moderated. Kildee pointed to Flint’s long decline in manufacturing jobs, saying the region still needs to compete for new industries while protecting community interests. Cherry addressed nondisclosure agreements, saying he doesn’t sign them and believes they shouldn’t be part of the process. He called incentives a “necessary evil” for remaining competitive. Hohman pushed back, saying Michigan’s results with major incentives have been mixed and urging the state to focus on economic fundamentals instead of large checks.

Environmental Questions Surface

Environmental concerns also surfaced, including groundwater issues, farmland loss and the level of land clearing already underway. Both Kildee and Cherry said they would support a full environmental study. Some residents said they felt left out until Sandisk withdrew, while others appreciated the chance to hear directly from officials. One attendee called the forum overdue but productive.

Kiertzner closed the event by noting this was the first forum of its kind and hoping it would not be the last.
