Fenton Road ‘Diet’ Sparks Heated Debate in Genesee County
There’s a stretch of Fenton Road that might be going on a “diet,” and drivers are not exactly thrilled about it.
Why Drivers Are Opposing the Fenton Road Lane Reduction
The Genesee County Road Commission wants to take it from four lanes down to three as part of a nearly $3 million rebuild between Grand Blanc and Hill Roads in 2027, according to a report from MLive. Sounds simple enough, right? Not if you’re one of the hundreds of people already signing a petition to stop it.

And the person leading that charge? Not a politician, not a developer, just a local delivery driver who’s on that road all the time and basically said, “Yeah, this is gonna be a problem.”

Her argument is pretty straightforward. Fewer lanes means more backups and slower traffic, and that could mean more frustration, bad decisions, and even road rage.
What the Genesee County Road Commission Says About Safety
But here’s where it gets interesting. The Road Commission says traffic on that stretch has actually gone down over the years, and trimming it to three lanes could reduce crashes, especially with all the side streets and driveways.

So now it turns into that classic debate. Do you keep it wider for convenience, or tighten it up for safety? They say if it doesn’t work, they could always go back to four lanes. But judging by the petition and the pushback, people aren’t too excited to be the test case.
