If it feels like every single road in Michigan is under construction right now, yeah, you’re not imagining it.

Why It Feels Like Every Road Is Under Construction

The state just dropped a list showing more than 80 road projects kicking off or continuing this week alone. Eighty. That’s not a couple of cones here and there, that’s full-on “leave early or don’t bother” territory depending on where you’re headed.

We’re talking major routes too according to MLive. I-75, I-94, US-127, US-23. Basically all the usual suspects are getting torn up, patched up, or squeezed down to one lane. And of course, it’s all weather dependent, which usually just means the timeline is a big question mark.

Now zoom in closer to home, because it doesn’t get any better. You’ve got the ongoing mess on I-69 in Genesee County, where lane closures are already slowing things down. Nothing extreme on its own, but it’s enough to mess with your commute if you hit it at the wrong time.

And then there’s I-475 through Flint, which feels like it’s been under construction forever at this point. That project is still going, still causing backups, and still not something that’s wrapping up anytime soon.

So when you stack all of that together, statewide construction plus multiple local projects, it turns into this perfect storm of brake lights, lane shifts, and people trying to merge at the last second.

Plan Ahead Before You Hit Michigan Roads

Bottom line, if you’re driving anywhere this week, just assume it’s going to take longer than it should. Maybe a lot longer. Because right now, getting from point A to point B in Michigan kind of feels like an obstacle course.
