Ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, Consumers Energy already had a planned outage scheduled for thousands of people in Byron and parts of Shiawassee County. But what nobody expected was an equipment failure that caused another outage impacting a sizeable portion of Mundy Township in Genesee County at the same time.

Why More Than 2,300 Byron Customers Will Lose Power

Consumers Energy says the planned outage will impact more than 2,300 customers beginning Friday night, May 29, while crews work with ITC Michigan on equipment upgrades designed to improve long-term reliability. The outage is expected to begin around 11 p.m. Friday and could last until 7 a.m. Saturday morning according to reporting from ABC 12.

Officials say the upgrades are necessary to help prevent larger outages in the future, but residents are understandably frustrated about the timing. Losing power overnight before a busy holiday weekend creates challenges for families hosting guests, storing food, relying on medical equipment, or simply trying to stay comfortable overnight.

Unexpected Mundy Township Outage Creates More Frustration

Then came another problem. An unexpected equipment failure caused a separate outage affecting parts of Mundy Township, creating even more frustration for customers already concerned about the planned Byron outage next weekend. With crews now responding to the unplanned issue while preparing for the scheduled outage, many residents are questioning why a major planned outage was scheduled heading directly into Memorial Day weekend.
