Nearly 3,000 Consumers Energy customers on Flint’s west side and in parts of Flint Township will experience a planned overnight power outage early next week. The utility company says the temporary shutoff is necessary so crews can complete urgent repairs at a local substation.

Planned Outage to Affect Flint and Flint Township

According to Consumers Energy, power will be cut at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Monday, with service expected to be restored by around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The impacted area is fairly large, stretching south of the Flint River, north of Corunna Road, east of I-75, and west of Springer Avenue. Despite the outage’s size, McLaren Flint Hospital will not be affected, ensuring that critical medical operations can continue without disruption.

Why the Repairs Are Necessary

Company officials emphasized that while outages are always inconvenient, this work is essential to avoid bigger and unexpected problems down the road. Steve Herrygers, Consumers Energy’s senior executive director of high voltage distribution said:

We understand this work will have an impact on many people who count on us, but it’s important that we do this work now to prevent a power outage that we can’t plan for.

Overnight Schedule and Backup Date

If weather or other circumstances prevent crews from making the repairs as scheduled, the work will be moved to the following night, Tuesday. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead for the temporary outage, especially those who rely on electricity for medical equipment or other critical needs.
