ABC 12 reports that the City of Durand and Atlas Township are both among just 10 finalists statewide in the Consumers Energy Foundation's "Put Your Town on the Map" competition. The contest awards grant money to help small Michigan communities bring local improvement projects to life.

Durand Looks to Expand Iron Horse Park

Durand's idea centers around Iron Horse Park. The city wants to relocate a railroad train car into the park, adding another piece to the community's rich railroading heritage.

Atlas Township Proposes New Trail Connections

Meanwhile, Atlas Township is hoping to build a spur trail network that would connect residents and visitors to a local park and expand outdoor recreation opportunities.

The finalists are presenting their projects this week at the Small Town and Rural Development Conference at Crystal Mountain. First place receives $25,000, second place gets $15,000, and third place earns $10,000.

Statewide Competition Supports Small Communities

The competition is open to Michigan communities with populations under 10,000, and over the last several years, the Consumers Energy Foundation has helped fund a variety of projects across the state.

While communities from all over Michigan made the finals, it's nice to see two local areas still in the running. Whether it's preserving Durand's railroad roots or expanding recreation opportunities in Atlas Township, both projects would leave a lasting impact close to home.
