It was a frightening close call for Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies after their patrol SUV was hit by a suspected drunk driver during a late-night traffic stop south of Fenton.

Crash on US-23 Near Clyde Road

The incident happened on Wednesday, August 14, along US-23 near Clyde Road. Deputies had pulled over a vehicle and were speaking with the driver when another car came careening by and slammed into the back of the sheriff’s SUV.

Patrol Vehicle Sustains Rear-End Damage

Video was just released by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office on Monday which shows the dramatic moment of impact. Despite the violent crash, neither the deputies or the stopped driver were injured. The patrol vehicle, however, suffered significant rear-end damage, as confirmed by photos the department also shared on social media.

Driver Arrested With BAC Twice Legal Limit

According to investigators, the driver who struck the patrol car was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. Authorities say the individual’s blood alcohol concentration was more than twice Michigan’s legal limit falling into the Super Drunk category.

Campaign Highlights Dangers of Drunk Driving

The sheriff’s office noted that this crash occurred during the statewide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, an initiative running through Labor Day that focuses on reducing impaired driving incidents. Local and state agencies have stepped up enforcement during the summer holiday season, when drunk driving cases tend to increase.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the crash underscores how dangerous impaired driving is — not just for those behind the wheel, but for everyone on the road, including first responders. “When you choose to drive impaired, you’re making a decision that can change lives forever. Tonight, we were fortunate. Tomorrow, someone else might not be,” the post read.
