Upon their arrival at Gerber Memorial Hospital, Callaway claimed that the woman was shot by strangers at a local Park & Ride where he met up with her and her granddaughter for a visit. However, police eventually discovered the truth about what actually happened thanks to testimony from the woman's 12-year-old granddaughter.

The Actual Michigan Shooting Incident

The police investigation determined that the shooting actually took place two hours away after Callaway was apparently drunk and doing some target practice outside the home with his .22 caliber handgun. Police say that during his drunken shooting spree he missed the target and his shot went through the front door striking the woman's abdomen.

Callaway’s Attempt to Cover Up

Because of his criminal record, the fact that he was prohibited from possessing or using a gun, and because he shot the victim, Otis Callaway decided to try something that only an intoxicated person would do. In an attempt to try to avoid the consequences of his past Callaway decided to drive the victim, and her granddaughter, two hours away before stopping to have her wounds treated.

The Victim’s Recovery and Legal Action

According to local prosecutors, the woman was in critical condition and had to be flown to Butterworth Hospital, located in Grand Rapids, for additional treatment. While she did survive the shooting, she is still facing medical complications. Callaway was arrested at the hospital and now faces sentencing for his charges on September 25, 2025.
