Police from Livingston County caught up with the suspect just before he exited U.S. 23 at M-59 in Hartland in a commercial area with lots of traffic.

Spike Strips and Side Swipes

He continued on M-59 into the Howell area as officers ahead of the chase deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

Despite their efforts, the spike strips didn't deter Nelson who was able to swerve to avoid them, sideswiping another vehicle in the process. The suspect then turned south on Hughes Road and continued traveling at a high rate of speed.

Crash at Golf Club Road

The police chase came to an abrupt stop when Nelson ran a stop sign at Golf Club Road where he collided with a Chevy truck.

Thankfully, the 66-year-old that he hit reported only minor injuries after his 2020 Silverado rolled onto a guardrail. He was taken for a check up at University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

Charges and Legal Consequences

Nelson is currently being held on a $100,000 bond and is facing multiple charges including third-degree fleeing and eluding police, receiving or concealing a stolen vehicle and reckless driving.
