High-Speed Chase Through Genesee County Ends in Crash
I-75 was shut down at the Genesee County/Oakland County border for several hours yesterday when a high-speed police chase came to an abrupt end.
Apparently there has been a recent trend of vehicles being stolen from Genesee County and Mid-Michigan then taken to Detroit to be resold. The Grand Blanc Township Police Department and our local Michigan State Police have been aware of these crimes so they were ready when a car was reported stolen yesterday.
Yesterday a Porsche was reported stolen from a community in Genesee County. Once local authorities were informed they went into action. They stationed officers along I-75 in Grand Blanc Township to look for the stolen sports car.
The police were able to locate the Porsche but then the situation escalated into a high-speed chase down I-75 through Genesee County. According to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief Bill Renye the suspect is from Detroit and in his 20s.
Knowing his Detroit destination ahead of time an officer deployed something called Stop Sticks which are designed to deflate the tires of vehicles that drive over them. These sticks were deployed near the Genesee-Oakland County border near the Dixie Highway exit.
According to Chief Reyne, the suspect tried to avoid the sticks but in doing so his sudden maneuvering caused him to lose control of the the vehicle before it rolled several times. The driver of the stolen vehicle is now listen in critical condition at Flint's Hurley Medical Center.
I-75 remained closed for several hours as officials gathered evidence and documented the scene.
