A major roadway was closed Monday morning causing a traffic nightmare for commuters. It happened in the early morning hours after a high-speed police that ended with a major crash. The suspect is in critical condition after being ejected from a stolen vehicle.

Timing Out The Pursuit

The chase initially began at 3:15 this morning when Sterling Heights Police attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle was a stolen black Dodge Charger which immediately fled as police tried to stop the driver.

Then at 3:25 the MSP Second District shared on a post on X a Request for Assistance. The request stated that the crash occurred near Nine Mile Road on westbound I-94 and blocked all travel lanes.

The Crash

The high-speed chase wound through several Macomb County neighborhoods before the suspect attempted to get on the freeway when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The pursuit lasted roughly ten-minutes and ended with the suspect being ejected from the vehicle when he crashed and totaled the stolen car.

The Suspect

Police said that the suspect did have a criminal history on his police record, that he was a 27-year-old and that he was from Detroit. They offered no other details about the driver.

Following the crash the 27-year-old was reportedly in critical condition at a Detroit-area hospital.

Freeway Closure

The investigation and subsequent cleanup following the crash took out a major travel artery for commuters causing backups on surface streets in the area.

UPDATE: The crash was cleared and the freeway reopened before noon.
