The internet did what the internet does best after a FedEx semi crashed Sunday on Michigan freeway, suddenly everybody became an investigator.
Crash on I-696 Sparks Internet Investigation After Dashcam Video Goes Viral
The crash happened on eastbound I-696 near Dequindre Road when the semi slammed into the concrete median wall, sending debris flying across the westbound lanes. The good news is no major injuries were reported. After seeing the video released by Metro Detroit News on Facebook, that’s the first thing everyone is thankful for.

The roads were wet from overnight rain, and many people immediately pointed to hydroplaning as a possible cause. A loaded semi traveling at highway speeds on wet pavement is a tough combination, and a sudden loss of traction could explain the violent swerve.
Michigan Drivers Debate What Caused Metro Detroit Semi Crash
As the video spread online, the theories started rolling in according to yahoo!news.com.
Some people wondered if driver fatigue played a role, especially since the crash happened early in the morning. But several truck drivers pushed back, saying you can’t assume someone was tired simply because a crash happened overnight.

Another theory came from someone with trucking experience: a blown steer tire.
If that’s what happened, the driver would have been fighting to control a massive truck with very little time to react.

One truck driver also suggested another possibility — that a vehicle may have cut off the semi, pointing out brake lights appearing right before the truck suddenly swerved.

The truth is, nobody watching a few seconds of dashcam footage really knows exactly what happened.

That’s the challenge with viral crash videos. They show the moment things go wrong, but rarely the full story leading up to it. What is clear is that driving a semi is a demanding job, especially in bad weather. A situation like this could have ended much worse.
