A major crash closed southbound US-23 at Thompson Road in Fenton Township Tuesday afternoon.

Crash Shuts Down Southbound US-23 in Fenton Township

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the incident happened shortly after 2 PM on March 10, 2026. The Genesee County 911 Dispatch Authority reported that all southbound lanes of the freeway were closed at Exit 84, Thompson Road, just before 2:30 PM.

Drivers were forced to exit the freeway as emergency crews responded to the scene.

Traffic Backed Up for Miles Toward Grand Blanc

By around 3 PM, traffic backups had stretched for miles. The line of stopped vehicles extended from Thompson Road, where traffic was forced off the freeway, all the way back to just north of the Grand Blanc Road exit near Rankin in Mundy Township.

The crash added to a growing list of frustrating traffic incidents drivers in Genesee County have dealt with this year.

Another Rough Year for Genesee County Drivers

On February 13, a vehicle crashed into a bridge on I-75 at Coldwater Road, closing that stretch of the freeway for hours. Earlier in the year, another accident shut down northbound US-23 for hours during the morning commute on January 8.

That is not even counting the dangerous winter stretch when Genesee County emergency crews responded to more than 500 crashes in just five days because of ice, snow, and extreme cold that made road salt ineffective.

US-23 Reopens Prior to Genesee County's Afternoon Rush

Fortunately, Tuesday’s crash did not keep the freeway closed all afternoon. The Michigan Department of Transportation reported that the scene was cleared at approximately 3:19 PM.

Traffic has been slowly returning to normal speeds, although drivers may still experience lingering delays in the area.
