More than 130,000 pies are being pulled from store shelves after federal regulators announced a multi-state recall, with Michigan among the states affected, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

What You Need to Know About the Recall

The FDA said the products were distributed to 14 states, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, before the recall was issued on September 5. The agency classified the action as a Class II recall, meaning the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects.

The recall, initiated by Jessie Lord Bakery, LLC of Torrance, California, involves its lemon meringue pies. Regulators say the desserts contain undeclared Yellow #5, a food dye that can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals.

FDA Class II Recall Explained

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a Class II recall is a situation in which the use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Yellow #5 can include hives, itching, or swelling. Individuals with known sensitivities are advised to discard the pies or return them to the store for a refund.
