Tater Tots Recalled, What Michigan Families Need to Know
If you’re like a lot of Michigan families, there’s a decent chance you’ve got a bag of tater tots sitting in the freezer right now. They’re easy, they’re comforting, and they somehow work for everything from breakfast casseroles to late-night snacks. But before you preheat the oven this week, you may want to take a closer look at the bag.
Why the FDA Issued the Tater Tot Recall
The Independent reports that McCain Foods USA Inc. is voluntarily recalling nearly 39,000 cases of frozen tater tots after the Food and Drug Administration flagged the possible presence of clear, hard plastic fragments in the products. The recall affects two popular brands, Ore-Ida Tater Tots and Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels, and Michigan is among the 26 states where the products were distributed.
Which Tater Tot Products Sold in Michigan Are Affected
According to the FDA, about 21,256 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots are part of the recall. Those are the ones many Michigan shoppers are most likely to recognize, since Ore-Ida is a freezer staple in grocery stores across the state. According to The recall also includes 17,597 cases of Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels, which are more commonly sold to restaurants, schools, and other food service operations.

This week, the FDA upgraded the recall to a Class II. That sounds technical, but it essentially means that eating the affected products could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues. The good news is that no illnesses have been reported so far. Still, federal health officials say it’s not worth the risk.
What Michigan Consumers Should Do If They Have Recalled Tater Tots
If you have Ore-Ida Tater Tots in your freezer, check the UPC code 1 00 72714 00215 8 and look for any of the listed batch codes tied to the recall. For Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels, the UPC to check is 1 07 34730 62740 0, along with its associated batch codes. Those details are usually printed on the bag, though sometimes they’re easy to overlook.

If your tots match the recall information, don’t cook them, don’t taste-test them, and definitely don’t turn them into a brunch casserole. The FDA says to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
Why Food Recalls Have Become More Common
This recall is also part of a broader trend. Throughout 2025, several food products have been pulled from shelves due to foreign materials showing up where they don’t belong, including breakfast foods and even salad dressings. It’s another reminder that while recalls aren’t common, they do happen, and checking notices like this one can prevent a bigger problem.

As for breakfast? Michigan kitchens are nothing if not adaptable. Hashbrowns, frittatas, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, or waffles can all step in if tater tots are temporarily off the menu. The key takeaway is simple: take 30 seconds to check your freezer, and you can keep a cozy Michigan meal from turning into an unwanted surprise.
