Henry Ford Genesys Nurses Are Still On Strike Nearly One Year Later

It’s crazy to think about it. The nurses strike in Grand Blanc Township is approaching the one-year mark. So much has happened in Genesee County since the nurses at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital went on strike at 8 o’clock on the morning of September 1, 2025.

Did anyone think it would last this long? Well, it has, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. They started in the late-summer heat, held their ground through the fall, then stayed out there through a brutal Michigan winter and an unpredictable spring.

And now here we are... summer once again. We're closing in on Labor Day, when this whole thing started nearly a year ago.

Nearly A Year After Walking Out, The Grand Blanc Township Nurses' Strike Continues

These days, instead of bundling up against snow and freezing temperatures, the nurses are dealing with another challenge, Michigan's brutal heat. WNEM shared that the strikers are using misting fans, jugs of water, umbrellas, and tarps for shade while continuing to walk the picket line outside Henry Ford Genesys Hospital.

The biggest issue now continues to be what happens if and when they return to work. Henry Ford Health says it has offered wage increases, staffing incentives, and job guarantees based on seniority, but says it can't guarantee every nurse will return to the same unit, shift, or position because permanent employees have been working throughout the strike.

Return-To-Work Protections Remain The Biggest Sticking Point in Nurses' Strike

According to nurses.org, the nurses say that's exactly what's keeping them on the picket line. They argue experienced nurses should be able to return to the specialized departments they've spent years working in, rather than being reassigned somewhere else.

As of now, more than 750 nurses and case managers represented by Teamsters Local 332 remain on strike, making this one of the longest-running nursing strikes in the country. And as Labor Day approaches once again, there's still no contract agreement and, unfortunately, no clear end in sight.
