A group of organizations are coming together to help neighborhoods in Flint "Light Up the City" this week.

Flint Neighborhoods United, Michigan State Police, the Flint Police Department and the Genesee County Sheriff's Department are sponsoring the Light Up the City project to help unite Flint neighborhoods. On Wednesday and Thursday, Light Up the City will canvass area neighborhoods in efforts to improve communication and understanding between neighbors with the goal to build a foundation for strong sustainable neighborhoods.

As part of Light Up the City, a Porch Light Initiative will also be launched. Representatives from the above organizations along with Wal-Mart and Consumers Energy will be in neighborhoods to provide resources - which include free compact fluorescent light bulbs - and assistance on working with community organizations, businesses and neighbors on making neighborhoods safer.

Residents are being asked to turn on their porch lights in support of Light Up Your City. For more information on the campaign, and also on how you can help, contact the Michigan State Police at (810) 733-5869.
