Off-Duty Michigan State Trooper Saves Skier Who Collapsed on Trail
Some heroes put on skis instead of a cape.
What began as a routine winter outing turned into a life-saving moment on January 3, thanks to the quick thinking of an off-duty Michigan State Police sergeant.
Quick Action on the Trail
Sergeant Dennis Wagner of the MSP St. Ignace Post was enjoying a cross-country ski trip at Nub’s Nob Ski Resort in Harbor Springs when he noticed another skier suddenly collapse on the trail. Realizing the situation was a medical emergency, Wagner immediately rushed to help.
How the Rescue Unfolded
Though he was off duty at the time, Wagner began rendering aid by rolling the man onto his back, properly positioning his head, clearing his airway, and starting chest compressions. According to Fox 2, resort staff and nearby skiers quickly stopped to assist until ski patrol arrived with an automated external defibrillator and oxygen equipment.

As CPR continued, the AED delivered shocks that helped restore the skier’s pulse and breathing. The man was then transported down the trail in a toboggan and transferred to Emmet County EMS before being taken to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital for further treatment.
What Police Are Saying
Michigan State Police say the skier is expected to make a full recovery. Wagner, who also serves as a first-aid instructor for the department, was later recognized for using his training to help turn a critical moment into a life-saving outcome.
