MSP Offering Defensive Driving Course for Teens

As a parent, it’s nerve-racking when your kids turn 16 and get their driver’s license. Sure, there is some pride in the fact that your child is growing up, and it’s obviously a major milestone. But with the way people are on the roads these days, parents worry more about other drivers.

Michigan State Police Offers Teen Defensive Driving Program

That’s why the Michigan State Police is offering a program that takes Driver’s Education classes to a whole new level.

They are offering a program called Teenage Defensive Driving. The five-hour program is designed for licensed teenagers between 16 and 19 years old. The program’s curriculum involves an hour of instruction online, and an additional four hours of hands-on training.

What Teens Will Learn in This Michigan Driving Course

According to Michigan.gov, they cover several areas of defensive driving during in-class training, which are then reinforced with practical exercises. This includes defensive driving, skid control, serpentine driving, controlled braking, and evasive maneuvering.

There are some requirements for teens to take part in the program, including being fully licensed as a GDL Level 2 driver. Participants must also be between 16 and 19 years old. During all of the driving exercises, a Michigan State Police patrol car will be provided.

What Teens Will Learn in This Michigan Driving Course

However, there are only a few of these classes happening this summer, and each class is limited to just 18 students. This allows for three students per instructor. Teenage Defensive Driving classes are scheduled for June 30, July 1, and July 2, 2026.
