Shots fired during a domestic dispute brought a Mid-Michigan community to a halt yesterday (7-31-2025). Michigan State Police responded to a call from the 100 block of Main Street in a small Genesee County community after the victim was able to flee the residence and call for help.
Domestic Violence Victim Escapes, Calls Police for Help
The victim sustained serious injuries before she could run from the scene and call 911. Fortunately, none of her wounds were life-threatening. To protect her privacy, police have not released her identity.
Armed Suspect Barricades in Michigan Home
Upon arrival, Michigan State Police say the 54-year-old suspect barricaded himself inside his Main Street home and refused to speak with officers. Even after the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team made contact and attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender, the suspect refused and began making threats.
The unidentified, heavily armed gunman threatened to harm officers if they approached and insisted he had no intention of going to jail. This initiated a standoff between the MSP and the suspect that lasted for hours.
Tear Gas Ends the Siege
Authorities eventually deployed a tear gas canister into the residence to force the man out. As he exited, he began firing at police vehicles and equipment. Officers returned fire, shooting and killing the 54-year-old suspect. None of the witnesses or police officers involved were injured during the exchange.
