Where Will Gordie Howe Land on The List of Longest Suspension Bridges?

Surrounded by a great list of contenders the new Gordie Howe International Bridge will spit the list of the 10 longest bridges in half, tying for the number five spot. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge II, erected in 1950, is the same length as the new Gordie Howe International Bridge at 2,800 feet..

Don't worry! At a staggering 3,800 feet, the Mackinac Bridge is solidly planted in the #3 spot on that lest.

Final Stage of Contruction

The bridge's main span was completed in 2024, but now crews are working on the electrical systems in addition to the plumbing and drainage systems.

They are also completing work on the protective fencing, painting lines on the road way as well as installing new traffic signs.

Plan for Opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge

While the construction is slated to be done sometime in September, the plan is to open the new corridor in October or November. The exact date of the new bridge's opening is yet to be announced.

So if you prefer taking the only bridge currently open to civilian traffic to Ontario from Detroit as opposed to the Tunnel, it's predicted that 60% of the traffic from the legendary Ambassador Bridge will begin to use the new Gordie Howe International Bridge once it opens later this year.
