But now President Donald Trump is threatening to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge unless Canada makes major concessions to the U.S., including possibly giving the U.S. ownership of at least half of the bridge. And that’s where a lot of people here are scratching their heads.

This bridge has been years in the making. Construction started in 2020 after a long political fight Michigan remembers well. The deal was straightforward. Canada agreed to pay the full upfront cost, about $5.7 billion, and recover that money over time through tolls. Michigan would co-own the bridge. Traffic congestion would ease and trade would flow more smoothly. That agreement has been in place for years.

Trump now argues Canada has treated the U.S. unfairly, pointing to tariffs, Canadian liquor policies, trade talks with China, and the fact that much of the bridge wasn’t built with U.S. steel. The Detroit Free Press reports that his message is clear: no concessions, no opening.

Why the Gordie Howe Bridge Matters to Michigan

The problem is that blocking the bridge doesn’t just pressure Canada, it hits Michigan first. This is the busiest border crossing between the U.S. and Canada. Auto manufacturing, agriculture, supply chains, and thousands of jobs depend on it. Business groups and exporters say delaying the bridge only raises costs and creates uncertainty.

There’s also some irony here. During his first term, Trump praised the Gordie Howe Bridge as a vital economic link. Now he’s floating the idea of keeping it closed. Michigan leaders say the bridge is opening regardless. And after all these years, the frustrating part isn’t the construction, it’s the politics.
