Politics Overshadow Long-Awaited Opening of Gordie Howe International Bridge Between Michigan and Ontario

After years of construction, delays, and anticipation, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is finally expected to open to traffic on Monday. But instead of celebrating together, the United States and Canada are now holding separate opening ceremonies after politics got in the way.

Why the Joint American-Canadian Celebration Was Canceled

The original plan called for leaders from both countries to gather for a joint ribbon-cutting celebrating one of the largest infrastructure projects ever built along the U.S.-Canada border according to NBC News. That celebration fell apart this week after President Donald Trump announced plans for new 50 percent tariffs on many Canadian imports.

Canadian officials responded, from reporting via The Guardian, by canceling the joint ceremony, saying it wouldn't be appropriate to celebrate together while the two countries are once again at odds over trade. Canada will instead host its own opening event.

Why the Gordie Howe Bridge Matters to Windsor & Detroit

It's an unfortunate twist for a project meant to symbolize cooperation between two longtime allies. Named after legendary Detroit Red Wings icon Gordie Howe, the six-lane bridge stretches between Detroit and Windsor and is expected to become one of North America's busiest commercial border crossings.

The crossing will help relieve congestion at the Ambassador Bridge while providing another critical route for the billions of dollars in goods that move between the United States and Canada every year.

The Political Disagreements Don't End With the Ceremony

Canada also released details of the long-awaited bridge governance agreement after facing criticism for keeping it confidential. According to the agreement, half of the bridge's net revenue during the first 15 years will go toward a U.S.-controlled economic development fund. Canada will use its portion of the revenue to begin repaying the billions it invested to build the crossing. The agreement also gives the United States a larger voice in future toll decisions than initially expected.

For drivers, though, none of that changes the biggest takeaway. According to the CBC, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is still scheduled to open Monday, giving travelers and commercial traffic a brand-new crossing between Detroit and Windsor.
