
The $4.7 Billion Bridge Everyone Has Been Waiting For Is Nearly Ready
If you've driven through Detroit lately, you've probably spotted it. The Gordie Howe International Bridge has been sitting there, stretching across the Detroit River, looking finished and ready to go. And now, after years of construction and plenty of political drama, it looks like we may finally be getting close to opening day.
A Major New International Crossing Between Michigan And Ontario Set to Open
Reports say a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for this Friday, which is a pretty big sign that things are moving forward. And Fox 2 says traffic could start using the bridge as soon as next week, although officials still haven't announced an official opening date.

What's interesting is that this bridge has become much more than just a bridge. Click On Detroit reported that it's been caught up in the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
Political Tensions Have Delayed Progress of The Gordie Howe Bridge
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump suggested the crossing shouldn't open until certain concerns with Canada were addressed, while Canadian officials have hinted the project became part of larger trade negotiations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Michigan leaders on both sides of the political aisle have been pushing to get it open. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, former Governor Rick Snyder, business groups, and transportation officials have all argued that the crossing is too important to leave sitting idle.
How The Gordie Howe Bridge Could Impact Trade And Traffic
And it's easy to see why. According to The American Prospect, the six-lane bridge is expected to move hundreds of trucks every hour and help relieve congestion at the aging Ambassador Bridge. It's also expected to strengthen trade between Michigan and Ontario, one of the busiest international trade corridors in North America.

For now, we're still waiting on the official word. But after nearly a decade of construction and years of debate, it finally feels like the Gordie Howe International Bridge is about to go from a landmark on the skyline to a bridge people can actually drive, walk, and bike across.
