The Genesee County Land Bank says a new type of theft is creating headaches for crews working to improve neighborhoods throughout Flint and Genesee County.

Flint Land Bank Cleanup Costs Continue To Grow Due to Tree Theft

According to Executive Director Michael Freeman, people have been illegally cutting down trees on Land Bank-owned properties and selling the wood for profit. The problem is especially frustrating because many of the trees being targeted are healthy, valuable species such as black walnut.

Freeman said the thefts create more than just a financial loss. Once the trees are removed, the people responsible often leave branches, stumps, and debris behind. That leaves the Land Bank responsible for cleanup, adding extra work and costs to rehabilitation projects already underway according to ABC 12.

Valuable Genesee County Trees Are Being Targeted

The Genesee County Land Bank works to return tax-foreclosed properties to productive use, often clearing lots and preparing sites for future development. When trees are illegally removed, those efforts can be delayed.

To help combat the problem, the Land Bank has partnered with the University of Michigan and the City of Flint to install trail cameras on some properties. Freeman said those cameras have already captured footage of individuals cutting down trees without permission. The footage is being turned over to law enforcement for investigation.

Freeman compared the crime to other forms of property theft that have long plagued vacant homes in the area. Freeman said,

It's theft. This is no different than when a house gets stripped of its copper.

While cameras are helping identify suspects, Freeman said residents remain one of the best tools for preventing these crimes. He encourages neighbors to pay attention to unusual activity and report it if they see people cutting trees on Land Bank properties.

Genesee County Residents Can Help Stop The Theft

Officials remind residents that only vehicles clearly marked as Owen Tree Service, the Genesee County Land Bank, or Consumers Energy are authorized to remove trees from those locations.

Timber Theft Carries Serious Penalties in Michigan

Under Michigan law, timber theft can result in penalties of up to five years in prison and fines reaching $10,000. The Land Bank hopes increased awareness and community involvement will help prevent additional thefts and keep redevelopment projects moving forward throughout Flint and Genesee County.
