And 80-year-man was enjoying some time at the YMCA on Farmington Road when a 21-year-old from Oakland County got into a heated argument with the older gentleman. Despite the age difference the younger man attacked his elder with brutal force.

Attack at the YMCA

The 21-year-old is identified as Malik Smith of Farmington Hills. According to police witnesses reported that as Smith began his attack some Good Samaritan tried to come to the rescue.

One of the witnesses tried to stop the attacker before he slammed the head of the victim on a nearby counter. That was when another man assisted the elderly man by pulling Smith off of him. Onlookers called 9-1-1 as the assailant left the YMCA.

The attacker was located and taken into custody by police shortly after the attack due to a tip from yet another Good Samaritan.

Michigan Wolverine to the Rescue

It was later discovered that a retired Michigan football legend was the one who pulled Smith off the unidentified man. It was Wolverine legend from the University of Michigan, Braylon Edwards.

According to Jeff King, Farmington Hills Police Chief, 'As evidenced by the significant injuries inflicted on the victim, it is clear that Mr. Braylon Edwards’ intervention played a pivotal role in saving the victim’s life.'

What Happens Next?

Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement, 'The victim was left unconscious and bleeding, and he had to be hospitalized after this assault.'
