When a Tuscola County man couldn’t buy his favorite Michigan Lottery ticket, he settled for a different scratch-off. That unexpected choice turned into a big win.

Retailer Sells Out of His Favorite Ticket

The player, who chose to remain anonymous, said he stopped at the Speedway gas station on West Caro Road in Caro. Unfortunately, the station had sold out of his favorite ticket, the Triple Red 777s. So the player settled for the Michigan Lottery's Detroit Tigers instant ticket instead.

He left the store to scratch his ticket and couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I stopped at the gas station to buy a Triple Red 777s ticket, but they were sold out, so I told the cashier to give me a Detroit Tigers ticket instead,” the 57-year-old player said. “It was hard to believe when I saw I’d won $500,000, but after looking the ticket over several times, I told myself it must be real.”

“Looks Like You Have to Go to Lansing for This One”

The man says he went back into the gas station to have the cashier confirm his win.

“I signed the ticket and took it back into the store to have the cashier check it. After she scanned it, she handed it back and said, ‘Looks like you have to go to Lansing for this one!’”

Man Plans to Spend His Money Wisely

He tells the Michigan Lottery that he plans to use his winnings to help his family and do some investing.

“Winning $500,000 is an answered prayer and still hasn’t fully sunk in.”
