Summer in Michigan means one thing for a lot of families, heading to the lake, the pool, or out on the boat. But before you grab the sunscreen and towels, water safety experts are reminding everyone that a little planning can go a long way.

Water Safety Starts Before You Get in the Water

The Flint River Watershed's Jaime Welch says one of the biggest mistakes people make is getting into the water without knowing what they're dealing with according to a report from ABC 12. Before you swim, know how deep the water is, whether there's a current, and what the conditions are. While we don't have rip currents here in Genesee County, there are still plenty of situations that can turn dangerous in a hurry.

If you've got kids with you, the biggest rule is simple. Never take your eyes off them. If you need to step away, even for a minute, make sure another adult is specifically watching them. Assuming "someone's watching" is how accidents happen.

Why Constant Adult Supervision Matters

Welch also recommends making sure children understand basic water safety. Don't swim in deep water without an adult, and if they're on a boat or kayak, wear a properly fitted life jacket. Adults should be wearing one, too.

It's also worth talking through "what if" situations before you head out. What happens if the kayak tips over? Do you swim to shore? Can you climb back in? Having a plan ahead of time can make all the difference if something unexpected happens.

Learning CPR Could Save a Life

One final recommendation could save someone's life. Learn CPR. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, and knowing what to do in those critical first few minutes can make all the difference while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
