
6 Dead in Drownings Across Michigan During Holiday Weekend
The Fourth of July holiday weekend is meant to be a time of fun and celebration, but several Michigan families are heartbroken this morning after tragic holiday losses. While fireworks can be dangerous and even deadly, so can Michigan’s lakes.
Drownings across the state have steadily increased since the beginning of the holiday weekend, and Michigan officials are urging residents to be cautious while swimming this summer to prevent further tragedies.
Deadly Incidents Across the State
On Friday, July 4, a man fell off a jet ski and did not resurface in Mecosta County. The following day, on Saturday, July 5, rescue workers located and recovered the body of 34-year-old David Thompson from Lake Mecosta around 11:30 a.m.

In Muskegon County, another man was reported missing in White Lake on Saturday. Firefighters launched a search, and the man’s body was discovered later near a nearby marina.

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Cheboygan County on July 5 when a 16-year-old boy went underwater and did not resurface for nearly seven minutes. His 54-year-old father jumped into Burt Lake to save him but also failed to come back up. Tragically, both father and son drowned.
Two drownings were also reported in Oakland County over the weekend. The first occurred in White Lake on July 5. Authorities recovered the body of 49-year-old Jason Dwane Brookshire on Saturday night after he entered the water from a boat and did not resurface.

The second incident in Oakland County happened on Sunday, July 6, in Springfield Township. Police reported that 86-year-old Gerald Vernus Burge, who had dementia, was reported missing early that morning. His body was later found in a nearby pond.
