18-Year-Old Dies After Going Underwater in Michigan Lake
A tragedy played out in Michigan yesterday (6/8/2025) when a teen was enjoying a day at the lake. Around 2 p.m. Sunday, the teen was swimming and went underwater but never resurfaced.
Where the Incident Happened
It happened at Campbell Lake in Kent County's Byron Township. According to reports there was a massive rescue effort provided by the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) along with support from local Fire Departments, along with a concerned civilian.

However, due to the depth of the lake and the lake water conditions at the time, they initially had difficulty locating the 18-year-old. Unfortunately when they were eventually able to locate the teen it was too late. Sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene.
What Authorities Are Saying
In a statement released by the Kent County Sheriff's Office, 'We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the young man who died this afternoon at Campbell Lake. Losing a loved one is very difficult, and we recognize the impact this has on those who knew him.'
While parents are usually concerned about young children swimming in lakes or pools, if something goes wrong in the water anyone at any age could find themselves in a life-or-death struggle like the one the 18-year-old Michigan male faced in his last few minutes.
Staying Safe Around Michigan Waters
The Kent County Sheriff's Office said that Campbell Lake has no known safety concerns, but they urge Michiganders to use caution around water. The investigation into the teen's death is still ongoing.
