From drownings to boat explosions, 2025 has been a horrific and heartbreaking year on Michigan’s lakes. Another tragedy struck over the weekend, claiming the life of a 14-year-old boy.

Emergency Response at Sturgeon Bay Beach

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Sturgeon Bay Beach at 5:41 p.m. Sunday (8/3/2025). Deputies responded to the Bliss Township beach after reports that two teenagers in the water were desperately struggling to stay afloat.

Sheriff Warns of Strong Lake Michigan Currents

According to Emmet County deputies, a Good Samaritan was able to rescue one of the teens. Upon their arrival, rescue crews began to search the area where the other teen was last seen. Sadly, the situation turned into a recovery mission when the boy’s body was pulled from the water. Emmet County Sheriff Matt Leirstein expressed his sorrow and issued a warning for all swimmers.

Our hearts are broken for the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time. Our dive team rescuers advised me there was a very strong northeast current that pulled them in that direction as they entered the water to begin their search efforts. This is just a reminder Northern Lake Michigan and its currents are very dangerous. We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution when entering the water.”

Michigan’s Deadly Summer on the Water

The weekend drowning of the unidentified teen follows a year filled with tragic drownings across Michigan, along with two separate boat explosions this summer.
