For the second time in just three weeks, a boat has exploded on a Michigan lake—this time, seriously injuring a man and two teenagers.
Explosion on Pontiac Lake
The blast happened Sunday afternoon (7/27/2025) on Pontiac Lake around 1:20 p.m. According to officials, the Waterford Township Fire Department and the Oakland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene near Williams Lake Road and M-59. By the time emergency crews arrived at the boat launch, the flames had already burned themselves out.
Boating Victims Suffer Severe Burns
The victims—identified as a 45-year-old man from Waterford Township, his 16-year-old son, and another 16-year-old boy—suffered serious burns in the explosion. The father and son are hospitalized and listed in stable condition.

However, the other teen is in critical condition with burns covering more than 50% of his body, according to a statement from Steve Huber, Public Information Officer for the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say the trio were at the boat launch preparing to head out on the lake. As they turned the ignition on their 17-foot Chris-Craft, the boat suddenly exploded, sending a fireball into the air. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Another Michigan Boat Blast This Month
This shocking incident comes just three weeks after another explosion on Lake Huron near Port Austin. On Friday, July 11, a group of five people were boating near a lighthouse when their vessel blew up without warning, launching them into the air. Miraculously, all five landed back on the boat—four with non-life-threatening injuries.
