Traffic at a Standstill as UAW Workers Strike Against GM in Flint

It's the first UAW strike since 2007 and the workers are out in full force.

Tim Hortons coffee cups and Better Made pretzels sit on the curb next to the lines of traffic on Bristol Road this morning in Flint as the UAW began its first strike against GM in 12 years.

A spokesperson for the UAW said that contract negotiations will begin again this morning at 10 AM. GM has enough inventory for a two-week-long strike, and the UAW had $721 million in their strike fund as of 2018.

Strike pay for workers is about $250 per week. One of the key points of the strike is healthcare; workers argue that their jobs are physically demanding and that healthcare is essential. Another issue is that there was no clear path for temporary workers to become permanent in GM's current offer.
