We recently told you about legislation in Michigan that could make free school meals a permanent fixture in public schools statewide. However, one of the challenges for many families during the summer is that school is out, meaning those school lunches disappear for a couple of months.

Free Summer Lunch Program in Genesee County Returns June 22

That's why it's great to see Genesee County bringing back the Meet Up and Eat Up program starting June 22.

The program offers free lunches to any child or teenager 18 years old and younger, and the best part is there are no forms to fill out and no registration required. If your kids are hungry, just show up during the scheduled serving times and grab a meal according to a report from WJRT.

Three Local Genesee County Parks Participating in Free Lunch Program This Summer

There are three locations participating this year. Lunches will be available at Flushing County Park, For-Mar Nature Preserve in Burton, and Bluebell Beach in Genesee Township.

Beyond the free meals, I like what this program represents. It gives kids access to healthy food during the summer months while also giving families a reason to get outside, visit some of our local parks, and spend time together.

How Meet Up And Eat Up Helps Local Flint-Area Families

For many parents, every little bit helps right now. Groceries certainly aren't getting any cheaper, and when the kids are home all day, the food bill can climb quickly. Programs like this help fill that gap while making sure local kids have access to a nutritious lunch.

The meals start June 22 and run at different times throughout the day depending on the park. So if you've got kids at home this summer, it might be worth adding one of these stops to your family's routine. It's free, it's local, and it's a resource that's available to everyone.
