Businesses in Saginaw have until March 1st, 2019 to install security cameras and lights in their parking lots.

The City Council unanimously passed the ordinance on Monday, which they hope will prevent the "likelihood of death and injury" for patrons. The council members say cutting down on crime is key to businesses succeeding in the city.

Earlier this month, a 65-year-old woman was assaulted in the Jefferson One Building in downtown Saginaw, and security cameras helped authorities to catch the suspect.

If a business refuses to comply, they'll be issued a civil infraction.
