Rising Costs in Supplies Forces Popular Clio Bakery to Make Menu Change
Everyone is being hit hard by the rising cost of day-to-day essentials. From gas prices to groceries, there aren't many that can avoid the pinch, including one of the area's favorite bakeries.
The Brough Bakery in Clio is making the tough decision to change its iconic menu selection and switch things up after rising prices for crucial supplies including fryer oil. Believe it or not, fryer oil isn't cheap and it's the main essential to producing the bakery's popular sweet treats. According to owner Gwen Brough, the oil can run about $300 a week. The result? A change to the menu.
After all these years The Brough Bakery, founded in 2014, will no longer be serving up those delicious donuts. The bakery announced that Saturday, August 13th, will be the last donut day at the 70s-themed bakery.
"This was not an easy decision to make. However, the deciding factor was the rising costs - esp. with fryer oil. You've all come to know and love our fresh-tasting doughnuts. This is done, in part, by changing out our fryer oil every week. With the national supply chain issues, fryer oil is just one of the many costs that has jumped for us. We will continue to bake the delicious cakes, cupcakes, pies, and breakfast pastries that you all love. We just won't be having doughnuts".
For customers, the news is a big blow, but the bakery wants everyone to know that they aren't going anywhere, they aren't closing, they're just switching it up a bit. That switch means revamping the menu and offering some new selections.
In addition to the cakes and pies, The Brough Bakery will now have deli items on the menu. Customers will be able to pre-order sandwiches and salads or even get on some Grab-n-Go items to enjoy.
