WARNING: The following story contains graphic accounts of child abuse that may be hard for some to read, so please do so at your own discretion.

Eric and Angela Corcoran of Deerfield Township in Livingston County were arraigned this week, and are now behind bars in the Livingston County jail. Charged with second-degree child abuse for alleged emotional and mental abuse against their adopted son, the couple is being held on a $500,000 bond. They're awaiting an exam conference in District Court on March 24th, followed by a March 31st probable cause hearing to see if the cases will go to trial.

Protective services investigated the allegations a number of times, dating back to May of 2010 when the boy was 12. Court documents allege that the couple isolated him from the rest of the family in a corner when he was younger. As he got older, he was locked in the basement, isolated from the rest of the family. Meals were left at the top of the stairs, and he was forced to use a camping toilet to urinate and defecate. The boy told authorities that he survived by making a family for himself out of stuffed animals.

I just live my life in the basement.

Other allegations include Angie 'slapping' the boy's legs while he was sleeping, holding him to the floor with her foot, and striking him with a hanger and breaking it in the process. A CPS worker reported that the adopted mother was not loving toward her adopted son in the same way she was toward her biological offspring, and that he had no toys or decorations in his basement 'bedroom'. There was a twin bed, but there were no sheets or blankets. According to a report the boy told a DHS worker, "I just live my life in the basement." The teen also said, "I just want a loving family [who] will hug and kiss me."

There is much more in the court documents that I won't get into, but I will leave you with this. When has it ever been okay to lock a child of any age in a basement? On a less rhetorical note, what should happen to the parents and their biological kids?
