Growing up in Durand, also known as Railroad City U.S.A., I've spent a lot of time stopped a railway crossing. I've always been fascinated with trains. It blows my mind how something so massively heavy can move so fast. But when something goes wrong with a passenger or freight train when it's in motion, the damage and aftermath can be deadly and devastating.
Where Did The Train Derail?
The train somehow jumped the tracks near the crossing on West Michigan Avenue near Forest Drive in Saginaw just after 4 p.m. on Thursday. As the train derailed six cars completely fell off the tracks and ended up on their side.
Losing their cargo, the train cars spilled massive amounts of corn everywhere. Luckily no one was hurt in the incident. However the railroad crossing is expected to be closed for several days.
What Happens Next?
Officials from the Huron & Eastern Railway along side the Lake State Railway Company were on scene to investigate and begin the cleanup efforts, Due to the sheer size and scale of the accident heavy equipment will be brought in to help remove the freight cars from the tracks. Other equipment will be dispatched to clean up the spilled corn.
