Flint To Enforce New Weight Restrictions On Saginaw Street To Protect Historic Bricks

If you've ever driven through downtown Flint, you've probably noticed that part of Saginaw Street still looks a little different than most roads in the city. That's because it's made of historic brick, and city officials want to keep it that way.

The City of Flint announced it will begin strictly enforcing weight restrictions on a section of Saginaw Street starting Wednesday, August 5.

According to ABC 12, the restriction applies to Saginaw Street between Court Street and First Avenue, where vehicles weighing more than 5 tons, or 10,000 pounds, will no longer be allowed to travel.

Heavy vehicles can cause significant wear and damage to brick streets over time, leading to expensive repairs and deterioration of the roadway. City officials say limiting heavier traffic will help extend the life of the historic surface while maintaining the character of downtown.

What Vehicles Are Affected by Flint's Brick Ban?

Several types of commercial and industrial vehicles typically exceed the new weight limit, including:

• Semi-trucks and tractor-trailers
  Concrete mixer trucks
  Dump trucks
  Garbage and refuse trucks
  Large moving trucks
  Construction vehicles
  Equipment transport trucks
  Fully loaded delivery trucks

Most everyday drivers won't notice a difference. Passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, and many smaller commercial vehicles fall below the 5-ton threshold and can continue using the roadway as usual.

Drivers Should Plan Alternate Routes in Downtown Flint

Commercial drivers operating vehicles that exceed the weight limit are being advised to use alternate routes around downtown. The city says signage has already been installed throughout the area, and enforcement will begin on August 5. Drivers who violate the restriction could face penalties.
