Michigan Cop Vindicated, Body Cam Shows He Didn't Kick Opossums

A West Michigan police officer is off the hook now, after bodycam footage proved that he didn't torture a family of opossums.

The accusations began when Lowell resident Zachary Myers posted a sarcastic thank you to a local police officer on Facebook. Lowell is located just a few miles east of Grand Rapids.

Myers' Facebook post from last week. detailed how he stopped to help a family of opossum lying in the middle of the road. Myers says the mother had been run over and that he was trying to help its joeys to safety. Myers claims that a Lowell police officer, identified as Officer Stephens, showed up and began swearing at him about blocking the road.

Myers goes on to say that the officer kicked one of the opossums "so hard it flew 10 feet from the middle of the road to the grass on the side."

He later filed a complaint against the officer.

Body Cam Footage Tells a Different Story

Grand Rapids TV station WZZM obtained a copy of the officer's bodycam footage which shows that the officer moved one of the animals to a ditch with his foot and picked another up by its tail in order to get it off the roadway.

Police Officer Reprimanded

The officer did, however, express some disdain for the animals.

"I feel like I could like drop-kick it," Stephens is heard saying. "But the thing is with these opossums, too, is they'll sit here and play dead. He's not dead."

As the officer leaves the scene, the bodycam captures him saying, "Un-f***ing real."

According to the Lowell police department, the officer has been reprimanded for his use of inappropriate language.

The incident is being investigated by the Kent County prosecutor's office for further review.
