A man nearly fell to his death Sunday on Mackinac Island, slipping down a cliff and hanging on for dear life. He was rescued with just seconds to spare.

Mackinac Island Rescue Details

According to the Mackinac Island Fire Department's Facebook page, rescue workers were dispatched Sunday afternoon after the man fell while rock climbing on the island. Dispatchers noted that he may have broken his arm.

As multiple fire units headed to the scene, dispatchers reported that the man was slipping and could not hold on much longer.

How Firefighters Reached Him

According to Up North Live, Squad One prepared for a technical line rescue from the top of the cliff while Ladder Two attempted to reach the man from the road below.

With just seconds to spare, a firefighter reached the man and helped him descend the ladder. One firefighter said the man “had about 10 seconds left before letting go.”

Climbing Ban on Mackinac Cliffs

Climbing the cliffs of Mackinac is prohibited, according to the Mackinac Island Fire Department. Pictures of the rescue are not available due to confidentiality concerns.
