Kroger Slashing Nearly 1,000 Jobs — Will Michigan Workers Be Hit?
Kroger has announced plans to lay off nearly 1,000 employees companywide, a move aimed at streamlining operations after the collapse of its proposed merger with Albertsons.
Why Is Kroger Cutting Jobs?
A spokesperson for the Cincinnati-based grocer told WLWT-TV that about 200 jobs at its headquarters will be cut, but did not provide details on whether other regions will be affected. It remains unclear if any Michigan employees are on the chopping block.
Could Michigan Workers Be Affected?
Kroger currently operates 122 stores across 82 Michigan communities, part of its national footprint of 1,239 stores in 16 states. In June, the company said it would shutter about 60 stores over the next 18 months. At the time, no Michigan locations were on the closure list, which included select stores in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
What Kroger’s CEO Is Saying
Interim CEO Ron Sargent acknowledged the impact of the layoffs in a statement, writing:
"These decisions are never easy, but we know thoughtful, yet difficult, choices are necessary to set our organization up for continued success. While we announced role reductions today, we continue to grow and reinvest those savings in areas that drive our strategy and benefit our customers directly – in lower prices, new store growth, and more jobs in stores."
For now, it remains to be seen whether Michigan workers will be directly affected by the cuts.
