Major Grocery Chain with 120+ Michigan Locations to Close 60 Stores
A major U.S. grocery chain with more than 120 stores in Michigan says it will shut down about 60 locations across the country over the next 18 months. The company says it is a strategic move to cut costs and reinvest in higher-performing stores.
In its first-quarter earnings report released Friday, June 20, Kroger said it plans to reduce its footprint by about 5%, shutting down roughly 60 underperforming stores.

Kroger’s National and Michigan Footprint
Kroger is one of the nation’s largest supermarket operators, running about 1,239 grocery stores in 16 states. In Michigan, the chain has 122 locations across roughly 82 cities, making it the second-largest grocery chain in the state behind Grand Rapids-based Meijer. Michigan accounts for nearly 10 percent of Kroger’s total U.S. footprint.
Financial Performance and Strategic Shift
Despite the planned closures, Kroger remains a retail giant. The company reported $45.1 billion in sales for the first quarter of 2025, a slight dip compared to $45.3 billion during the same period last year. Kroger says it has seen strong e-commerce and fresh goods sales and plans to focus on these, as well as its pharmacy department, for areas of growth.
“As a result of these store closures, Kroger expects a modest financial benefit,” the company said in its earnings filing. “Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance.”
The company has not yet disclosed which specific stores are being targeted for closure. It remains unclear how many, if any, of Kroger’s Michigan locations will be affected by the cuts. However, a partial list of locations that will be closed is available here.
Store Closures and Employee Impact
Kroger says employees at affected locations will be given the opportunity to transfer to other stores within the company. With more than 120 locations in Michigan alone, workers may be reassigned rather than laid off, depending on their region and role.
This is not the first time Kroger has trimmed its footprint. In recent years, the company has closed stores in California, Colorado, and Arkansas to focus on locations that are more profitable.
