Strike Update: Teamsters, Genesys Still Deadlocked Over Staffing and Pay
The standoff between Henry Ford Health Genesys and its nursing staff is well into its second month (52 days so far), with no sign of a breakthrough anywhere in sight. Nearly 750 nurses, represented by Teamsters Local 332, have been walking the picket line outside the Grand Blanc Township hospital since September 1, demanding fair staffing ratios and the same contract protections they’ve had in the past.
Hospital Says It “Cannot and Will Not” Meet Demands
But in a statement released Wednesday, Genesys said it 'cannot and will not' meet the union’s demands, pointing to concerns about patient care, attendance, and flexibility in staffing.

The hospital claims the old contract, which was negotiated under previous ownership, led to frequent absences and costly premium pay. They also noted Genesys hasn’t been profitable for years, ending 2024 with a $53 million deficit.
Teamsters Say Nurses Aren’t Asking for More
However, union leaders see things differently. Teamsters officials say the hospital has been stalling negotiations and offering unfair concessions. Local 332 President Dan Glass says the nurses aren’t asking for more, they just want to keep what they had, including overtime pay, health coverage, and fair scheduling. He adds that nurses want a promise that they won’t be overloaded with too many patients at once.
National Union Leaders Join the Picket Line
National Teamsters leaders Sean O’Brien and Fred Zuckerman plan to join the Grand Blanc nurses today (October 23, 2025) in a show of solidarity. Meanwhile, negotiations are set to continue next week.

Despite the hospital’s firm stance, Glass says the nurses are just as determined.
