Again? Genesee Valley Center Suddenly Shuts Its Doors to Shoppers
If it feels like we've been here before, you're right. Once again, Genesee Valley Center in Flint Township is closed to shoppers without much warning.
Rumors started swirling on social media Sunday afternoon when shoppers reported being at the mall around 3:00 pm when the mall started closing its doors. Shoppers noted there wasn't much indication or even a sign as to why the mall was closed.
On Monday, August 7th, there was finally a statement, or should we say a social media post, by the mall indicating that once again the door was locked due to a water main break. The post indicated that the mall was closed due to the break and that "updates will be posted as they become available".
If you remember, less than a year ago during the last days of the holiday shopping season, the mall closed due to a water main break. Tenants reported that particular incident to involve quite a bit of damage to the mall. Pictures circulating on social media showed water throughout the mall's main halls and some businesses.
The December closure saw businesses shuttered until December 30th with a gradual reopening of the less damaged areas followed by the full mall shortly after. In December stores with private entrances such as JC Penney, Macy's, Planet Fitness, Logan's, and Barnes & Noble were able to open in just a few days, but so far there is no indication as to where the break was this time and what the severity, if any, the damage is.
It's no secret that Genesee Valley Center has been struggling to keep tenants and draw shoppers for quite some time. There was hope that the new mall manager would be able to implement some new ideas to bring the mall back to what it once was.
Aside from the post to the center's Facebook page, there has been no other information provided. The mall has also turned off comments to the post as well.
We will keep you posted as information becomes available.
