Four Years After Midland’s Dam Collapse, Here’s Where Things Stand Now
It’s been four years since the dams failed in Midland County, a moment that’s now etched into Michigan’s collective memory. What started as heavy rain quickly turned into a disaster that swallowed neighborhoods, displaced thousands of residents, and forever changed how the state looks at aging infrastructure. For many communities, the images of flooded homes and rushing water remain impossible to forget.
A Statewide Wake-Up Call
The collapse wasn’t just a natural disaster, it was a wake-up call. Investigations revealed years of warnings, missed deadlines, and a dam safety system stretched thin. In the aftermath, lawmakers faced a hard reality. Michigan has hundreds of dams, many decades old, and too many owned by entities that either could not or would not pay for necessary repairs.

That realization led to action. The state appropriated more than $50 million to address high-risk dams, funding projects that local governments and private owners simply could not tackle alone. The money has already made a tangible difference. Dozens of dams have been repaired, reinforced, or removed altogether, lowering the risk of catastrophic failure and making downstream communities safer across the state.
Where Edenville Fits In Now
The Edenville Dam, the most infamous of them all, remains under close scrutiny. While progress has been made since the collapse, it continues to serve as a reminder of what happens when warning signs are ignored and maintenance is deferred for too long. Work continues, oversight is tighter, and the expectations are far higher than they were before 2020. The Edenville Dam is expected to be replaced by Fall of 2027, and the goal is to refill Wixom Lake in 2028.

Statewide, the lesson is clear. Dam safety is no longer an abstract issue. It’s about homes, businesses, and lives downstream. Michigan is in a better place today than it was four years ago, but the work is far from finished, and the memory of Midland ensures it won’t be taken lightly again.
