Flint Mayor Neeley Wants $2 Million of Covid Relief Money To Fight Blight
Flint is getting $99 Million from the government for Covid-19 relief and recovery, and Mayor Sheldon Neeley is starting to say where that money will go.
The American Rescue Plan is aimed at helping communities hit hardest by the pandemic. Since the announcement that Flint would be getting the money, Mayor Neeley and the city have been taking suggestions on where the money should be spent. City officials have done a great job of making sure everyone has a chance to voice their opinion with an online survey.
The survey listed a few suggestions for people to pick, along with a comments section where residents can make other suggestions on how the money should be spent. Blight is on the suggested list from the city, and was also one of the main write in suggestions. With blight being such an obvious issue in Flint, it didn't take long for Mayor Neeley to allocate some of the money.
Mayor Neeley talked about how important it is to take care of the blight issues in Flint through a press release.
This $2 million will allow for a massive increase in our cleanup efforts and help us to move our city forward in a positive direction
The best part about this $99 Million coming to Flint is that we should never have to wonder how or where the money is being spent. The city did a great job of immediately looking for input from residents, but that is just the beginning. Community input it great, but it doesn't mean anything if there is no accountability on how the money is spent. That's why it's important to point out that the city set up an online portal for anyone to check in and see where the money is going. You can access the Check Registry here.
