Flint Community Schools Remain Virtual With Plans To Reopen This Month
Flint Community Schools have been virtual since the start of 2022, but it looks like that could end this month.
The strain that the rising Covid numbers have put on local districts has been too much for many to handle. Flint is far from the only school that has been forced to switch to virtual learning in our area. Grand Blanc announced that they would be finishing this week virtually, and Clio is making the same move.
Flint School officials are hoping to return to face-to-face learning before the end of January, but there will be at least one more week of virtual.
Right now school officials are planning on staying virtual for the week of January 17th, with a return to in-person learning starting on January 24th. You can read the full statement from school officials here.
Will Virtual Learning Be A Thing of the Past Soon?
Most parents in Genesee County and surrounding areas are hoping that the answer is an undeniable yes, but that most likely is not the case.
Schools are dealing with more than just a rise in Covid cases due to the aggressive Omicron variant. Staff shortages in every department of schools have led to closures in multiple districts. The overall case counts will rise and fall, but without enough staff to maintain a normal school day schools are forced into tough decisions.
Despite the anger that parents are displaying over the switch to virtual or cancellations, we have to recognize that great job schools are doing of adapting on the fly. The biggest example is how Flint is managing to keep food distribution going for families that depend on it. Officials have released the food distribution schedule for the last virtual week.
During the week of January 17, food distribution services will be available on Tuesday, January 18, and Thursday, January 20 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the locations listed below.
- Eisenhower Elementary
- Freeman Elementary
- Holmes STEM Middle School
- Neithercut Elementary
- Flint Northwestern
