Heartbreaking Loss of a Baby Giraffe at the Detroit Zoo

The zoo is mourning the loss of Nguvu, a young male giraffe who had only been in Detroit since May according to WXYZ. Zoo officials say he was seriously injured Saturday during an interaction with other giraffes in the herd while they were outside in their habitat.

Click on Detroit reported that animal care staff rushed to help, and veterinarians monitored him around the clock, hoping he'd recover. Sadly, his injuries continued to get worse, and they made the heartbreaking decision to humanely euthanize him.

Nguvu Had Only Recently Arrived in Detroit Before His Untimely Death

The zoo says Nguvu quickly became a favorite among the people who cared for him every day, even though he'd only been there a few months. They also stressed that this wasn't caused by visitors or anything unusual inside the exhibit.

The Second Young Giraffe Lost at The Detroit Zoo This Year

What's especially heartbreaking is that this is the second young giraffe the Detroit Zoo has lost this year.

Back in February, a young giraffe named Okidi, who had been born just a few months earlier, suffered fatal injuries after running into a viewing panel inside her habitat.

Zoo officials say they'll carefully review exactly what happened with Nguvu to see if there's anything they can learn moving forward. For now, though, their focus is on caring for the rest of the giraffe herd, supporting the animal care team that's grieving this loss, and remembering a young giraffe whose time in Detroit was far too short.
